Rude, crude and funny, the series was a magnet for criticism, with one organization blasting “lewd punch lines about sex, masturbation, the gay lifestyle and the lead character’s fondness for pornographic magazines and strip clubs!” Al was a failure, but the show, starting in 1987, ran for 263 episodes and ten years — helping launch the FOX network.
