POT LINKED TO SUICIDAL THOUGHTS!
SHOCKING NEW RESEARCH!
SMOKING dope has been linked to suicidal thoughts among young adults, according to new research.
The study of more than 281,000 adults aged 18 to 24 from 2008 to 2019 found “marked increases in both cannabis use and suicidality,” say researchers from the U.S. National Institutes of Health.
Even dopers who said they didn’t get high every day — or fewer than 300 days a year —
“were more likely to have suicidal ideation and plan or attempt suicide than those who did not use the drug at all,” the researchers found.
“Those associations remained regardless of whether someone was also experiencing depression.”
Among people who reported experiencing a major depressive episode in the past year, 53 percent of folks who got high every day had suicidal thoughts, compared to 35 percent who didn’t get high.
In another disturbing trend, women who reported any cannabis use in the past year had a higher prevalence of suicidal thoughts in the previous year when compared to men.
Study participants answered questions about cannabis use or disorder, major depressive episodes and suicidality, which includes suicidal plans or attempts, in the past year.
“While we cannot establish that cannabis use caused the increased suicidality we observed in this study, these associations warrant further research, especially given the great burden of suicide on young adults,” says U.S. National Institute on Drug Abuse Director Dr. Nora Volkow, the study’s senior author.
