10 THINGS YOU DON’T KNOW ABOUT
CENE-STEALER Julia Garner has captured two supporting actress Emmy Awards portraying criminal Ruth Langmore on the Netflix drama Ozark. This month, she’s playing fake heiress and real-life grifter Anna Sorokin in the flick Inventing Anna. Here are ten things you don’t know about the 28-year-old native New Yorker.
1 She grew up idolizing Bette Davis. “I used to watch Turner Classic Movies all the time,” she says. “I was obsessed with What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? when I was nine years old.”
2 She began taking acting lessons at age 15 to overcome her shyness.
3 Director David Chase invited her to play a small role — which he wrote specifically for her
— in his 2012 movie Not Fade Away.
4 She doesn’t have a driver’s license.
5 For a month before Ozark started shooting, she practiced her Missouri dialect, but has yet to visit the state. “I would go to restaurants, and I would speak in the
accent,” she says.
6 When it comes to her looks, she doesn’t consider herself a typical Tinseltown starlet and explains,
“Not that I’m ugly, but I’m not Hollywood-standard beautiful or that simple beauty.”
7 She tied the knot with Mark Foster, frontman of Foster the People, in December 2019 at NYC’s City Hall — where her parents were wed 40 years earlier.
8 She’s admitted to binge-watching Vanderpump Rules and was starstruck when meeting series headliner Stassi Schroeder on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live.
9 To play Sorokin, she straightened her curly blond locks and dyed them red.
10 She’d like to model her career after Richard Dreyfuss, saying, “I love a really intense energy on the screen. Your eye just goes straight toward that actor.”
