ROBBIE ROBERTSON wanted to shoot the final public appearance of his rock group The Band on 16mm film. But when Taxi Driver director Martin Scorsese got involved, along came seven 35mm cameras and an operatic stage set with crystal chandelier­s, and it turned into 1978’s The Last Waltz — one of the greatest concert documentar­ies ever made. There was also a lot of drug use, and in post-production they managed to disguise the white powder visible on guest performer Neil Young’s nose!
