DOROTHY DANDRIDGE plays a sultry femme fatale and HARRY BELAFONTE plays the soldier who is totally ruined by falling for her in the daring 1954 all-Black musical Carmen Jones. Producer and director Otto Preminger didn’t think Dandridge could play a vixen who sings about destroying men and offered her the good-girl role of the soldier’s hometown sweetheart instead. But Dorothy changed into something more alluring and auditioned again — and this time, she got the part!
