SEXY bad-boy actor ROBERT MITCHUM plays a wicked preacher in the chilling and stylish 1955 film noir The Night of the Hunter — the only movie ever directed by the actor Charles Laughton, who fondly called the book it was based on “a nightmaris­h Mother Goose story.” Mitchum — with his own personal history of arrests and hard living — snagged the role after impressing Laughton with an offhand quip. When the director described the character as “a diabolical sh*t,” Mitchum piped up: “Present!”
