DISGRACED lawyer Alex Murdaugh — who came from a prestigious, patrician South Carolina family — proves good breeding, education and wealth don’t stop someone from being a lowlife, greedy scumbag.
Already accused of scamming his own law firm and clients out of at least $9 million, the 54-yearold is now charged with murdering his wife, Maggie, 52, and son Paul, 22, in
June 2021.
Maggie was slain with a rifle while Paul was killed with a shotgun on a family property.
According to prosecutors, the pill-popping junkie murdered his wife and the younger of two sons to distract from his other alleged crimes.
His family-founded law firm accuses him of funneling millions of dollars to his private accounts.
He’s also accused of ripping off the sons of his housekeeper Gloria Satterfield, 57, who died from a stroke after suffering injuries when she tripped over a Murdaugh family dog and tumbled down the brick front steps of their mansion in February 2018.
The sleaze told Gloria’s sons he’d handle their insurance suit himself, lawmen say.
But he never told them when the lawyer he’d hired to handle the case settled with the insurance company for $4.3 million — and he and the other attorney then split the loot, investigators charge.
Other clients accuse him of ripping them off, and in June, he was indicted for an eight-year money-laundering scheme where he allegedly wrote 437 checks for a total of $2.4 million to a friend, who cashed them for him.
Prosecutors say the shameful scammer slaughtered his wife and son just to attract public pity and drive lawmen away from his huge debts and other crimes.
Murdaugh’s lawyers deny it all, saying: “Alex wants his family, friends and everyone to know that he did not have anything to do with the murders of Maggie and Paul.”
But prosecutors insist:
“The murders served as Murdaugh’s means to buy himself some time.”
