NATURAL WAYS TO FIGHT OFF BAD BREATH
THERE’S no need to raise a stink! Experts say bad breath can be cured by consuming probiotic-laden fermented foods — such as yogurt, sourdough bread and miso soup!
Sulfuric compounds are the primary cause of persistently putrid breath as bacteria found in plaque, which coats the tongue and teeth, break down proteins in the mouth too rapidly, leading to excess amounts of the foul-smelling chemicals.
Oral hygiene products such as toothpastes, mouthwashes and tongue-scrapers may help halitosis — but for some, the effects are temporary.
However, researchers at Sichuan University in China say probiotics can impede the dissolution of proteins — and neutralize the stench — and provide a longer-lasting solution.
The scientists’ study involving nearly 300 people tested the effectiveness of probiotics Lactobacillus salivarius, Lactobacillus reuteri, Streptococcus salivarius and Weissella cibaria. The team’s data analysis shows folks who took supplements of the substances saw a drop in sulfuric compound-causing proteins — and a reduction in bad breath — in comparison to a placebo group.
But the experts say the observed effects only lasted up to four weeks, suggesting consumption must be maintained to keep odor at bay.
Sichuan’s Dr. Longjiang Li says, “Probiotics may inhibit the decomposition of amino acids and proteins by anaerobic bacteria in the mouth” and inhibit the creation of “smelly byproducts.”
The scientists warn more extensive research is needed. But a comprehensive analysis of multiple study findings suggests fermented foods help clear plaque and reduce the compounds responsible for bad breath.
