DNC chair Harrison: Democrats will support a candidate who can beat Trump

- Savannah Moss

Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison, a South Carolina resident and staunch President Biden defender after the debate, wrote in a lengthy statement to X that “the American people owe President Biden an enormous debt of gratitude for the unparalleled progress he has delivered over the last four years.”

President Joe Biden said Sunday that he is ending his bid for reelection amid intense pressure from Democratic leaders. He sounded the alarm that his path to beating former President Donald Trump in November had vanished.

The president’s historic withdrawal throws the 2024 race − already roiled by an attempt on Trump’s life − into uncertain territory, with Vice President Kamala Harris widely seen as the Democrat

most likely to take Biden’s place atop the party’s ticket. Biden endorsed Harris on Sunday.

“Democrats are prepared and united in our resolve to win in November. As we move forward to formally select our Party’s nominee, our values as Democrats remain the same – lowering costs, restoring freedom, protecting the rights of all people, and saving our democracy from the threat of dictatorship. We have and will continue to make this case to the American people,” Harrison wrote.

He mentioned the Democratic party will “undertake a transparent and orderly process to move forward as a united Democratic Party with a candidate who can defeat Donald Trump in November” and that the process “will be governed by established rules and procedures of the Party. Our delegates are prepared to take seriously their responsibility in swiftly delivering a candidate to the American people.”

Harrison did not immediately endorse Harris or any other potential candidate.
