Eugene L. Wolfert
Eugene L Wolfert unexpectedly passed away on July 24th, 2018. Gene is survived by his wife of 43 years, Adele and their four children together: Matthew (& Kayla) Wolfert, John, Jessica (& Ray) Acosta and Michelle. Gene loved and enjoyed his five grandchildren: Brianah, Sam, Isabel, Gloria and Margaret.
Gene was born in Greenwich, CT on September 14th, 1949. He was the eldest son of seven children and is survived by his siblings Valerie (& Joe) Murano, Veronica Lynn (& the late John) Biles, William (& Rose) Wolfert, Walter (& Wendy) Wolfert, Virginia (& Michael) Markowski, Robert Wolfert and many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors.
Gene served in the United States Navy as a BT2 from 1968 to 1974 aboard the U.S. Navy Destroyer Escort USS Koelsch. He was a career Firefighter for the town of Greenwich for 20 years as well as a member of the Cos Cob Volunteer Fire Company. Gene was also a Boy Scout Leader and taught many Eagle Scouts in his troop at the Ernest Thompson Seton Scout Reservation in Greenwich. Eventually, he retired to Cooperstown, NY to pursue his dream of a simple, peaceful life in the country learning to develop a small farm of his own. He loved gardening and taking care of his various farm animals. A lifelong firefighter, he enjoyed serving for 14 years as a member of the Middlefield Volunteer Fire Company. Gene also had a love for building things and working with his hands; he would spend most of his time tending to his farm and engineering any odds and ends into something useful. Gene was always willing to help anyone on any project and was a self-taught Jack-of-all-trades. He also had an open ear, a kind word, a smile and a great big heart that loved everyone. He will be greatly missed.
A memorial Service will be held at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 4 Riverside Avenue, Riverside, CT on Aug. 24th at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery. All friends and family are encouraged and welcome to attend.
