GYFL Grad­u­a­tion Bowl high­lights

This is the third an­nual GYFL Grad­u­a­tion Bowl, con­ceived to bring to­gether all grad­u­at­ing se­niors, from all teams, and com­bine them into two teams for one fi­nal game. The thought be­ing that, af­ter years of play­ing against each other, next year they will be play­ing as one team at their re­spec­tive high schools.

There is a week of prac­tice dur­ing Thanks­giv­ing week, af­ter the cham­pi­onship games have been played, and the game is played the Fri­day morn­ing af­ter Thanks­giv­ing with a tail­gate and postgame party. The coaches from the var­i­ous teams coach and it’s Red vs. Gold.

RED TEAM 32, GOLD TEAM 13

In the third an­nual GYFL Grad­u­a­tion Bowl, the eighth-grade se­niors put on a fan­tas­tic per­for­mance to close out the season. On a sunny but cold day at GHS Sta­dium, the Red team de­feated the Gold squad with a bal­anced at­tack that saw five dif­fer­ent play­ers on Red score touch­downs.

Lead­ing the Red team in rush­ing was James Wail­gum, who ran for 112 yards on five car­ries, scored a touch­down and threw for a touch­down. Jack Konigs­berg pounded out 96 yards rush­ing and scored a touch­down on one of five car­ries.

Also con­tribut­ing great runs were An­thony Ped­i­cano, AJ Pisacano, Dil­lon Stephens, Cole Studwell and Char­lie Dixon. Dixon scored the first touch­down for team Red on a 1-yard run. Zachary Ja­cob caught two passes, one of which was a touch­down. Studwell con­nected with TJ Le­gio for an 8-yard touch­down in the fourth quar­ter.

Quar­ter­backs Thomas Dur­va­sula and An­drew Walko also passed and distributed the ball well. Walko hit Antonio Vig­i­lante for a suc­cess­ful 2-point con­ver­sion.

The line played tough all day and opened up some huge holes for the backs to run through. Lead­ing the line­men were Jake Kier­nan, Tyler Senft, Henry Gold­berg, Ryan Bei­ley, Pey­ton As­lansan, Sean Cowie, Vinny Insinga, David Chidu, Ay­den Dis­cua, Louis Caves, Ado­nis Ro­driguez and Michael Cipol­lone.

Lead­ing the Red team on de­fen­sive tack­les were Wail­gum, Dixon, Bei­ley, As­lansan, Cowie, Ro­man Pen­nella and Carter Paul­son. Also con­tribut­ing key stops were Liam Reynolds, Reed Wil­liams and An­drew Lerner. Ser­got Boone suc­cess­fully de­fended two passes. Wail­gum had a touch­down-sav­ing tackle at the 2-yard line to stop a 55-yard run that ended the first half.

Lead­ing the Gold team on of­fense and turn­ing in a big per­for­mance was quar­ter­back Jack Wil­son, who ran for 246 yards on 15 car­ries and scored two touch­downs. Wil­son had two other touch­downs but they were called back on penal­ties.

Also pow­er­ing the run­ning game for Gold were Do­minic DeLuca, Ma­lik Samms, Ge­orge Her­nan­dez and Neikhi Buchanan. DeLuca counted for an extra point with a 3-yard run. Carl Grif­fasi and Samms caught passes for nice gains.

The Gold squad re­ceived great block­ing from Teddy Flynn, Xan­der Tom­masino, Ray Rug­giero, Timmy Pow­ers, An­dre Costal­lano, Bryan Pin­hiero, Eli Weiss, Isaac Leder, Ben Ayessah, Aryan Wad­wha, Robert Perl­man, Derel D’An­gelo, Miles Trager, Josh Banes and Jake Pob­joy.

On de­fense, the Gold squad was led in tack­les by Grif­fasi, DeLuca, Ge­orge Fun­gel­sang, Danny Fox, John Ray­buck and Antonio Or­tiz. Also adding some solid D were Wil­son, Her­nan­dez, Luke Lom­bardo, Zyian Cop­per, Drew Falla and Michael Moeller. Or­tiz and Her­nan­dez re­cov­ered fum­bles and Grif­fasi de­fended a pass.

There was pizza, dough­nuts and hot choco­late at the end of the game for all. Red team or Gold team, the boys had a fun day end­ing their GYFL ca­reers and get­ting ready for foot­ball at the next level, which for many of them will be at GHS.
