Town bids final farewell to George H.W. Bush

Scene… As the country mourned the passing of former President George H.W. Bush, the Greenwich Historical Society celebrated his life with a display last week of memorabili­a relating to the Bush family and the former president’s childhood in Greenwich. Items included photos, news stories, event programs and a letter from Bush to Greenwich citizens regarding an event in town in 1991 to recognize service members from Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

Bush, who grew up at 15 Grove Lane, where his home still stands, attended Greenwich Country Day and was a member of Christ Church in Greenwich. After serving the nation as a pilot in the U.S. Navy in World War II, he went on to graduate from Yale University in New Haven, where his son former President George W. Bush was born.

Out there… The First Presbyteri­an Church of Greenwich will hold its Carols By Candleligh­t Christmas concert at 4 p.m. Sunday at 1 W. Putnam Ave. The concert, led by the church’s Minister of Music Randall Atcheson, will feature the Chancel Choir, accompanie­d by the chamber orchestra, and piano and organ performing a selection of Christmas anthems, sing-along carols and Handel’s “Messiah.” A festive reception will take place afterward in the Church Fellowship Hall. Scene… Greenwich native Hope Hicks, former White House communicat­ions director for President Donald Trump, was seen shopping for Christmas trees at Sam Bridge Nursery & Greenhouse­s on North Street in Greenwich with her dad, Paul Hicks, and sister, Mary Grace. Hicks has been named chief communicat­ions officer for Fox News Channel’s parent company, based in Los Angeles

Out there… Greenwich native Felix Guiffra, who founded the Arch Street Music Collective, has partnered with Jed Simon, owner of Old Greenwich Social Club, for a third live music jam at the Old Greenwich Social Club from 8 to 11 p.m. Sunday. The event promises to have the feel of a 1960s Greenwich Village scene.

Scene… Second-grader Mackenzie Mercer of White Plains, N.Y., is playing the part of little Cindy Lou Who in the touring company of “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” Since Thanksgivi­ng, the group of profession­als has performed the Seuss classic in Chicago and Boston. Hometown fans can catch the musical as the troupe moves to Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theatre Thursday through Dec. 30.

Out there… The First Presbyteri­an Church of Stamford will hold its 27th annual Brass and Organ Christmas Concert at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. The concert will feature the New York Symphonic Brass with Jennifer Pascual, director of music at St Patrick’s Cathedral in NYC, and an ensemble of four trumpets, two French horns, five trombones, one tuba, two percussion­ists, and a pipe organ in the church at 1101 Bedford St., Stamford. Admission is free; an offering will be held.

Out there… Join in the holiday spirit as the Cos Cob Library hosts its annual Holiday Sing-Along from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. Friday. The Grand Central a cappella singers from Central Middle School, led by music director Rebecca Lipschutz, will perform at the event in the library’s Community Room. Winter wonderland­s… The Greenwich Chamber of Commerce announced the results of its 2018 Storefront Decorating Awards Contest at its Holiday Party held at Bulthaup last week. This year’s winners are First Bank of Greenwich in Cos Cob, the Greenwich Hospital Auxiliary on Hamilton Avenue and Greenwich Orchids, owned by Wendy Siegel, on Mason Street.
