Family gallery tours
The Bruce Museum, 1 Museum Drive, host Family Gallery Tours from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Sundays. The tours are best for ages 6-10. Free with regular admission, and no registration is required. Tours are scheduled for Dec. 9, Dec. 16, Dec. 23 and Dec. 30.
‘A Christmas Carol’ for kids
Tickets are now on sale for the town’s popular production of “A Christmas Carol.” Show time is 4 to 5 p.m. Monday at the Bendheim Western Greenwich Civic Center. It is an adaptation of the classic Charles Dickens story about miserly Ebenezer Scrooge and the three spirits who visit him on Christmas Eve to show him the error of his ways. The show is geared specifically for children in kindergarten through sixth grade. Tickets, costing $7 per person, can be purchased online at www.greenwichct.org/webtrac or at the civic center. Bruce Beginnings
A program for children ages 2.5 to 5 with an adult on Tuesdays at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Bruce Museum, 1 Museum Drive. Explore the museum collections and exhibitions through picture books and hands-on activities. This program takes place on the museum’s free admission day and space is limited. See the visitor service desk upon arrival to secure a spot. Topics change weekly, and include: Snowy Days on Dec. 11; and Arctic Adaptations on Dec. 18. Visit brucemuseum.org for more info.
Identifying trees without leaves
After the foliage fireworks of autumn, most people don’t notice the natural beauty of trees in the winter. On this guided walk from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday through the 40-acre Lapham Preserve with the Greenwich Land Trust and the Greenwich Tree Conservancy, you’ll learn new ways to look at the diverse features of bark, branches, and buds to identify our varied winter landscape. Experts will also discuss the many strategies flora and fauna employ to survive the winter. The walk covers mostly flat but mixed terrain. All ages are welcome on the free walk at the preserve, located between I-95 and 85 Richmond Hill Road. Sturdy, waterproof footwear along with warm clothes are recommended. RSVP to Sophie@gltrust.org.
Bridge for fun
The Perfectly Polite Bridge Group of Greenwich, which meets at the Greenwich YMCA, holds a number of programs. On Tuesday evenings, there is a new program called Relaxed Bridge with Moderator from 6:45 to 9 p.m. There is supervised play, questions welcomed, and notes permitted. You do not need a partner to play. Just finished a Bridge class? This is a friendly game to improve your skills. Cost is $10 for members and $12 for nonmembers. This is limited to 20 players. Every Wednesday morning, hosts an Advanced Beginners & Intermediate Game dubbed Relaxed Bridge with Moderator from 9:45 a.m. to noon. Questions are welcomed and notes are permitted. No partner needed to play. Every Wednesday afternoon is the Topic/Convention Bridge Game, which is also Relaxed Bridge with Moderator, from 12:45 to 2:15 p.m. All hands involve a convention. A brief review of the conventions and handouts will be provided. Also, there is the Beginner Bridge Class Section “B” from 2:45 to 4:15 p.m. This section assumes no knowledge of Bridge; play as you learn. Speakers at Retired Men’s Association
The Greenwich Retired Men’s Association offers a free program every Wednesday that is open to the public; no reservations are required. Social break starts at 10:40 a.m., followed by speaker at 11 a.m. Held at the First Presbyterian Church, 1 W. Putnam Ave., Greenwich. Try Tai Chi
Here’s a chance to enjoy Tai Chi lessons — fun and no pressure. Classes are held at 8 a.m. Wednesdays and at 9 a.m. Thursdays in the auditorium at the First Congregational Church Auditorium on Sound Beach Avenue in Old Greenwich, opposite Binney Park. Bruce Beginnings Jr.
This program at the Bruce Museum provides a welcoming and engaging museum experience for toddlers, ages 10 to 24 months, and their caregivers through hands-on play and exploration. Bruce Beginnings Jr. sessions are inspired by the museum’s collections and exhibits. It is held from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. on the second Thursday of each month, next time on Dec. 13. LEGO artwork on display
Connecticut artist Jessica Ewud, a longtime member of the Greenwich Arts Council, has premiered the newest creations in her popular LEGO Series at VW Contemporary, 353 Greenwich Ave., Greenwich. A muralist and contemporary artist from Redding, she specializes in mixed media and captures fun and exciting concepts. Ewud is most known for her LEGO series, which features iconic people, brands, and objects to create eye-popping images. The series of works are for sale and will be on display at VW Contemporary until Dec. 14. For more information, visit www.ewudart.com.
Free Friday Films
The longest-running film series in Greenwich continues on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at the Greenwich Library, thanks to the Friends of the Greenwich Library. Films are free, and doors to the Cole Auditorium open at 7:10 p.m. The lineup includes “Maudie” on Dec. 14.
Rob Mathes comes home for holiday concerts
Singer/songwriter Rob Mathes of Greenwich will return to the Performing Arts Center at Purchase College, for holiday concerts at 8 p.m. Dec. 14 and Dec. 15 and to the the Schimmel Center, 3 Spruce St., New York, at 4 p.m. Dec. 16 for the annual Rob Mathes Holiday Concert. The noted music producer is celebrating 25 years of performing his annual holiday concert and is honored to be joined this year by special guests Sting, Vanessa Williams and saxophonist David Sanborn, who will each perform a couple holidaythemed songs with Rob and the band. Winterfest at Greenwich Library
The Greenwich Library will celebrate Winterfest on Dec. 15 with a number of events. There will be a Winterfest Themed Storytime from 10:30 to 11 a.m. featuring songs and stories for toddlers, preschoolers, and early elementary age children. No registration required. Winterfest Drop-In Children’s Crafts & Activities will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Roll up your sleeves and make your own play-dough snowman, snowflake sun catcher and picture frame ornament.
