STAMFORD — One of the Stamford Police Department’s major crime squads is investigating the death of a Stamford woman after officers were called to a West Main Street apartment at 6 p.m. Friday, police said Saturday.

An autopsy on the unidentified woman was being conducted to determine the manner and cause of death, according to a statement from Lt. Tom Scanlon and Capt. Richard Conklin.

Police on Saturday were not saying how the woman died.

Officers were called to the apartment, in a fourstory building that houses Casa Villa restaurant at 182 W. Main St., to perform a welfare check on the woman, police said.

Once there, officers found a man in the apartment with the deceased woman, police said. The home was treated as a crime scene and searched after police received a search warrant for the premises, police said.

The man, identified as Gary Greig, has a criminal record, according to police, and was arrested on charges of possession of a firearm by a felon.

Greig was held on $250,000 court appearance bond.

Police were not releasing the name of the woman until her next of kin was notified of her death.

The woman’s death is being examined by police investigators with the assistance of the Stamford State’s Attorneys Office and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
