CT boys, girls dominate at New England Indoor meet

This season high school track coaches and track and field athletes throughout Connecticu­t have said during many interviews that the current depth of boys and girls talent make Connecticu­t one of the strongest states in the region and nationally when it comes to the sport.

On Saturday, the state showcased that talent in dominating fashion at the New England Interschol­astic Boys and Girls Indoor Track and Field Championsh­ips in Boston.

Highlighti­ng the girls competitio­n was Alanna Smith of Danbury who won the girls 300-meter dash in a meet record 38.22 and won the 55 dash in 7.03 seconds. In the boys competitio­n Gavin Sherry of Conard continued his record-breaking season by winning the 2 Mile in 8:51.49 and broke the meet record of 8:53.25. His brother Callum Sherry of Conard was third (9:01.34) and Aidan Puffer of Manchester was fourth (9:05.35).

In other boys competitio­n, Timothy Watson of Simsbury won the high jump (6-9), Duke Quermorllu­e of Norwalk was third (6-3) and Zyair Wali of Hillhouse was fifth (6-3).

Gianluca Bianchi of Greenwich won the 300 in 35.36, Colin Brown of Cheshire was fifth (35.80), Jonathan York of Hall sixth (35.86) and Paul Burkett of Sheehan seventh (36.10).

Nikita Omelchenko of Wilbur Cross was second in the Mile Run in 4:15.92, Sean Kennedy-Wonneberge­r of Hale Ray was fourth (4:16.96) and Carver Morgan of Avon was fifth (4:18.11). Gavin Sherry and Callum Sherry of Conard did not compete in the mile.

Aidan Law of HaddamKill­ingworth was second in the long jump with a distance of 21 feet, 9.5 inches. Colin Brown of Cheshire was third in the 55 dash in 6.54 and Nolan Freeman of New Milford was fourth in 6.57. Gary Moore Jr. of Hillhouse was third in the shot put with a distance of 628.5.

Michael Johnson of Lewis Mills was fourth in the boys 55 hurdles with a time of 7.55.

In other girls competitio­n, Rachel St. Germain of Somers won the Girls 2 Mile in 10:36.93, Anna Keeley of Fairfield Ludlowe was second (10:49.61), Katherine Sanderson of Hall was third (11:02.14) and Kathryn Marchand of Trumbull was fourth (11:03.01).

Ludlowe won the 1-Mile Run in 5:01.52 and Sydney Kelleher of New Milford was seventh in 5:10.49.

Mariella Schweitzer of Barlow was second in the long jump (18-2.25), third in the 55 hurdles (8.49) and fifth in the 300 (40.67).

Brittani Westberry of Windsor was second in the600 (1:35.53), Esme Daplyn of Greenwich was fifth (1:37.16), Kate Demark of Darien was seventh (1:37.893) and Riley Powers of Newtown was eighth (1:37.895).

Other notable finishers included:

Glastonbur­y girls winning the 4x800 relay (9:29.14), Staples boys were second in the 4x800 relay (7:56.76), Sheehan won the girls 4x200 relay (1:44.04) and Danbury was second (1:44.47), Hall boys were second in the 4x200 relay (1:31.82) and Greenwich was fifth (1:33.04), Tyler Bartlett of Fairfield Ludlowe was fifth in the boys 1000 (2:31.95), Tobias Ruffo of Hall was sixth in the boys 600 (1:22.99) and William Dalles of Cogninchau­g was seventh (1:23.78), Hall boys won the 4x400 relay (3:23.84) and Greenwich was second (3:27.33), Erin Brennan of Sheehan was fourth in the long jump (17-10.25).
