Carol Kilby Crowley, a longtime resident of Greenwich and Darien, CT, New York City, as well as West Palm Beach, FL, passed away on Jan. 11, 2023. She was 92.

Born in Buffalo, New York, she was the daughter of John (“Jack”) Homer Kilby and Katherine Killeen Kilby. She graduated from Georgetown Visitation Convent in Washington, D.C., and from Newton College of the Sacred Heart in Newton, MA with a BA degree. After graduating from college, she worked as a stockbroker in New York City. Later, she founded “Greenwich Friends of THIRTEEN” to focus on generating donations from Greenwich to New York PBS station WNET-13 (The New York Times noted in the obituary of her husband, John Crowley, that he “was for a short time chairman of Channel 13 and ushered it through a time of financial distress”). She also co-founded an art gallery adjacent to the Greenwich train station called “Gallery 3,” and she was a founding board member in 1972 of The Acting Company in New York City, co-founded by legendary Academy Award-winning actor John Houseman and theatrical producer Margot Harley. She continued to serve on the board until her death. “She was the most fun person I ever met and one of our most generous contributors over the past five decades, particularly during the numerous times when our survival was at stake, she always came to the fore,” said Margot Harley, co-founder of The Acting Company.

She was a longtime congregant at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Greenwich and St. Edward Catholic Church in Palm Beach, FL. She enjoyed interior decorating, playing bridge, scrabble, and solitaire, completing New York Times crossword puzzles, playing the piano, and hosting fundraising galas and parties for her many friends in

Greenwich, New York, and at the Palm Beach Bath & Tennis Club, where she was a longtime member. She will be remembered for her love of art and life (one of her favorite expressions was: “Take the cookies when they are passed”), her love for her four children, their three spouses, her five grandchildren, her generosity, and her unique sense of humor.

She is survived by her sister, Anne Gilhuly, four children, Sean Crowley, Katherine Crowley, Megan Crowley, and Sheilah Crowley; her grandchildren, Charlie, Sam, and John Thomas (“JT”) McAllister, Will and Olivia Knowlton. She was predeceased by her late husband, John (“Jack’) Crowley, and younger brother, Peter Kilby.
