- By Layla Schlack

Ina Garten, also known as the Barefoot Contessa, will make eight stops on the book tour for her upcoming memoir, “Be Ready When the Luck Happens.” One of them will be Hartford’s Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts.

Tickets are on sale for the Dec. 4 talk.

According to a news release from the Bushnell, the event will be an intimate conversation in which Garten talks about her childhood, meeting and marrying husband Jeffrey, buying the Barefoot Contessa specialty food market in Westhampton, New York and more.

“There is no recipe for writing a memoir, and the process helped me see that what happened to me in my 20s and 30s prepared me for what was to come,” Garten wrote in the caption of her Instagram post.

Before hosting “Barefoot Contessa” and “Be My Guest with Ina Garten”

on the Food Network or writing her 13 cookbooks, Garten grew up in Stamford. According to the Washington Post, her father was a

surgeon. Her mother, the Post states, wouldn’t let Garten cook, encouraging the young Garten to study instead.

On a visit to Dartmouth

College to visit her brother, a young Garten met her nowhusband Jeffrey Garten. They got married at her parents’ Stamford home

in 1968, according to Business Insider. He would eventually become Dean Emeritus at Yale University’s School of Management, at which point the couple purchased a house in Southport, Business Insider states, although she continues to live primarily in New York.

For a few years early in the marriage, Garten analyzed nuclear energy policy for the Office of Management and Budget in Washington, D.C., the Post states, and at night, she experimented with cooking. Embracing her love for all things culinary, Garten bought the Barefoot Contessa gourmet market.

After running Barefoot Contessa for 20 years, Garten put out her first book, “The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook,” according to Business Insider. This began her career as a cookbook author and television host.

“Be Ready When the Luck Happens” will be released on Oct. 1.

Tickets for the Bushnell book talk are available via the theater’s website, in person at the box office or via phone at 860-987-5900. Other tour stops include Boston and Brooklyn, New York.
