Try Tai Chi
Tai Chi lessons are offered at 9 a.m. Thursdays in the auditorium at the First Congregational Church Auditorium on Sound Beach Avenue in Old Greenwich, opposite Binney Park. The cost is $10 per one-hour session. Newcomers welcome. This relaxing exercise can loosen joints, improve balance, and teach graceful movements to music. Fun and no pressure. Art opening and reception
The Byram Shubert Library will host an art opening and reception of “Incoming Light,” a show of paintings by Patti Kane, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the Community Room. Refreshments will be sponsored and served by the Friends of the Byram Shubert Library. The show runs through Dec. 30.
2018 Legislative breakfast
The Greenwich United Way Community Planning Council will host an informational breakfast Thursday in the meeting room at Greenwich Town Hall, featuring a conversation among local and state government officials. Greenwich First Selectman Peter Tesei, state senatorelect Alex Bergstein and state senator Scott Frantz will be there, along with state representatives Mike Bocchino, Fred Camillo and Livvy Floren and state representative-elect Steve Meskers. Breakfast refreshments will be available at 7:30 a.m., and the discussion among the senators and representatives will go from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. To RSVP, call (203) 869-2221.
Tax Reform 2018 Explained
John Mezzanotte, Marcum’s office managing partner in Greenwich, will present a program on “How the 2018 Tax Changes Affect You” from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the Greenwich Library Meeting Room. He is a member of the High Net Worth, Family Office, and Alternative Investment industry groups. The program will focus on two areas affected by the TC&JA (Tax Cut and Jobs Act) – individual and closely held business income taxes. This program will cover: Major changes that are affecting most individual taxpayers especially the limitation on the deductibility of state income taxes; changes affecting smaller family businesses and their owners; and attempt to clarify the winners and losers of this extremely complex legislation as well as identify the areas where guidance has not been provided. Special Bush exhibit
The Greenwich Historical Society has mounted a special exhibit devoted to George H.W. Bush, the 41st president, who spent his formative years in Greenwich. A collection of Bush memorabilia, including photos, news stories and event programs, are on display through Friday at the historical society’s museum gallery at 47 Strickland Road, Cos Cob. The special Bush exhibit is free and open to the public, while admission will still be charged for the other historical society exhibits.
Free Friday Films
The longest-running film series in Greenwich continues on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at the Greenwich Library, thanks to the Friends of the Greenwich Library. Films are free, and doors to the Cole Auditorium open at 7:10 p.m. The lineup includes “A Quiet Passion” on Dec. 7; “Maudie” on Dec. 14; no film on Dec. 21 and Dec. 28; “Wonderstruck” on Jan. 4; “The B-Side: Elsa Dorman’s Portrait Photography” on Jan. 11; “Paterno” on Jan. 18; “California Typewriter” on Jan. 25; “Act of Violence” on Feb. 1; “Marshall” on Feb. 8.
