Sidewalk Sales

The annual Sidewalk Sales in Greenwich, the premier shopping event in town, return this week. Sponsored by the Greenwich Chamber of Commerce, the Sidewalk Sales will run from Thursday to Sunday. Over 120 retailers along Greenwich Avenue and across central Greenwich will take part in the highly anticipate­d shopping extravagan­za. Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. the first three days and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. the last day. This popular annual event attracts hundreds of shoppers in search of bargains on clothing, jewelry, accessorie­s, gifts and more from participat­ing retailers, restaurant­s and businesses. Carnival of Fun

St. Catherine of Siena Church in Riverside is holding its annual Carnival of Fun from Thursday to Saturday, from 6 to 11 p.m. Free admission, with bracelet night ($30) every night for the rides. Grilled foods, specialty dishes and live entertainm­ent nightly under the big tent. First prize in the raffle is $30,000 in American Express Gift Cards. Bruce Beginnings Jr.

This program at the Bruce Museum provides a welcoming and engaging museum experience for toddlers, ages 10 to 24 months, and their caregivers through hands-on play and exploratio­n. Bruce Beginnings Jr. sessions are inspired by the museum’s collection­s and exhibits. It is held from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. on the second Thursday of each month, next time on July 11. This program is free with general admission but space is limited. See the visitor service desk upon arrival to secure a spot.

Alive@Five summer concerts

Stamford Downtown’s Alive@Five Summer Concert Series kicks off on Thursday at 5 p.m. in Columbus Park in Stamford with musician, singer, DJ and actor Shaggy. The Alive@Five Happy Hour features $5 beer and wine from 5 to 6 p.m. Must be 21 or over. Admission is $20 — cash only. No re-entry. Classes at Greenwich Art Society

Summer classes at the Greenwich Art Society start

this week and run through the end of August. Classes are held at the third floor studio in the Senior/Arts Building at 299 Greenwich Ave. Beginner to advanced level classes are offered. The Greenwich Art Society as the oldest — and only — visual arts program in Greenwich taught by profession­al artists. Seaside Center is open

The Bruce Museum’s Seaside Center is open for the season at Greenwich Point Park from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays until Sept. 2. The Seaside Center educates visitors about the ecology of Long Island Sound and features a live-animal marine touch tank; four marine aquariums of local species; seashore dioramas of summer and winter birds, fish and other local species, and an underwater oyster reef; environmen­tal activities and video presentati­ons; and helpful naturalist­s on staff. AuthorsLiv­e at Byram

Local resident Mitch Silver will speak at AuthorsLiv­e at the Byram Shubert Library from 7 to 8 p.m Thursday in the Community Room. His novel “The Bookworm’’ takes readers from a secret operation during World War II with appearance­s by Noel Coward and Winston Churchill to present day London and Moscow, where Lara Klimt, “the Bookworm,” must employ all her skills to prevent an internatio­nal conspiracy. Copies of the book will be available for signing and purchase.

Indivisble Greenwich holds vigil

Indivisibl­e Greenwich joins internatio­nal and national groups on Friday for an event called “Lights for Liberty: Vigil to End Human Concentrat­ion Camps.” Vigils, rallies, protests and other events will be held in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and eight internatio­nal locations to stand against the inhumane conditions faced by children and others in detention camps at the U.S. southern border. Farmers Market

The Greenwich Farmers Market runs every Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. into the fall in the Arch Street commuter lot. Enjoy fresh Connecticu­t-grown produce all season. Artist in residence at the Bruce

Milena Alvarez, a student artist based in Norwalk, is running “Bruce Creates” workshops as the artist in residence at the Bruce Museum this summer. Bruce Creates workshops are offered for free to museum members and to visitors with paid admission. Participan­ts of all ages are welcome. 1-Mile Swim

The 32nd Annual Greenwich Point One Mile Swim will be held on July 13. The event, part of the Threads and Treads 2019 HSS Greenwich Cup race series, is sponsored by the Greenwich Swim Committee and the Town of Greenwich. The race start is at 7:30 a.m., with check-in opening at 6:30 a.m. Water temperatur­e should be about 70 degrees. Heats will be by age group, with colored caps provided. Open mic nights for creative types

The Greenwich Pen Women group is holding open mic nights around town. The nonprofit organizati­on, a branch of the National League of American Pen Women and made up of artists, writers and composers, will hold its next events at 3 p.m. July 13 at the Byram Shubert Library and on Oct. 21 at Greenwich Library. When arriving at the Open Mic nights, each participan­t signs up for a five-minute slot. During that time, they can read from flash fiction, memoirs, poetry, scenes, lyrics, book chapters or even blog entries. Bastille Day celebratio­n

The Alliance Française of Greenwich will celebrate the French national holiday, Bastille Day, on July 14 with the annual raising of the French flag at Greenwich Town Hall at 8:30 a.m. JeanLouis Gerin, Maître Cuisinier de France and President of L’Académie Culinaire de France, will be the master of ceremonies. Greenwich Francophil­es and Francophon­es will gather around the flagpole with local dignitarie­s for the reading of the Bastille Day proclamati­on and the singing of The Marseillai­se and the National Anthem.
