Seaside Center is open
The Bruce Museum’s Seaside Center is open for the season at Greenwich Point Park from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Tuesdays through Sundays until Sept. 2. The Seaside Center educates visitors about the ecology of Long Island Sound and features a live-animal marine touch tank; four marine aquariums of local species; seashore dioramas of summer and winter birds, fish and other local species, and an underwater oyster reef; environmental activities and video presentations; and helpful naturalists on staff. Sidewalk Sales
The annual Sidewalk Sales in Greenwich, the premier shopping event in town, return this week. Sponsored by the Greenwich Chamber of Commerce, the Sidewalk Sales will run from Friday to Sunday. Over 120 retailers along Greenwich Avenue and across central Greenwich will take part in the highly anticipated shopping extravaganza. Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. This popular annual event attracts hundreds of shoppers in search of bargains on clothing, jewelry, accessories, gifts and more from participating retailers, restaurants and businesses. Indivisible Greenwich vigil
Indivisible Greenwich joins international and national groups on Friday for an event called “Lights for Liberty: Vigil to End Human Concentration Camps.” Vigils, rallies, protests and other events will be held in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and eight international locations to stand against the inhumane conditions faced by children and others in detention camps at the U.S. southern border. The rally in Greenwich will be from 8:15 to 9 p.m. outside Town Hall, 101 Field Point Road. At the border, children are separated from their parents; cells and cages are massively overcrowded; detainees are not provided with soap and toothbrushes; meals are inadequate; adequate medical care is not provided to sick children; and detainees sleep on cold concrete floors. Farmers Market
The Greenwich Farmers Market runs every Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. into the fall in the Arch Street commuter lot. Enjoy fresh Connecticut-grown produce all season. Artist in residence at the Bruce
Milena Alvarez,a student artist based in Norwalk, is running “Bruce Creates” workshops as the artist in residence at the Bruce Museum this summer. Bruce Creates workshops are offered for free to museum members and to visitors with paid admission. Participants of all ages are welcome. 1-Mile Swim
The 32nd Annual Greenwich Point One Mile Swim will be held on Saturday. The event, part of the Threads and Treads 2019 HSS Greenwich Cup race series, is sponsored by the Greenwich Swim Committee and the Town of Greenwich. The race start is at 7:30 a.m., with check-in opening at 6:30 a.m. Water temperature should be about 70 degrees. Heats will be by age group, with colored caps provided. Wetsuits are allowed but competitors wearing wetsuits will be ineligible for awards. Refreshments and commemorative T-shirts for all participants. Open mic nights for creative types
The Greenwich Pen Women group is holding open mic nights around town. The nonprofit organization, a branch of the National League of American Pen Women and made up of artists, writers and composers, will hold its next events at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Byram Shubert Library and on Oct. 21 at Greenwich Library. When arriving at the Open Mic nights, each participant signs up for a fiveminute slot. During that time, they can read from flash fiction, memoirs, poetry, scenes, lyrics, book chapters or even blog entries. Artists and musicians can use their five minutes to discuss the inspiration behind a painting or share a piece of music. A moderator will introduce participants and manage the clock. Bastille Day celebration
The Alliance Française of Greenwich will celebrate the French national holiday, Bastille Day, on Sunday with the annual raising of the French flag at Greenwich Town Hall at 8:30 a.m. JeanLouis Gerin, Maître Cuisinier de France and President of L’Académie Culinaire de France, will be the master of ceremonies. Greenwich Francophiles and Francophones will gather around the flagpole with local dignitaries for the reading of the Bastille Day proclamation and the singing of The Marseillaise and the National Anthem. Family gallery tours
The Bruce Museum, 1 Museum Drive, host Family Gallery Tours from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Sundays. The tours are geared for kids ages 6-10. Free with regular admission, and no registration is required. Visit brucemuseum.org for more info.

Summer Family Day
The Bruce Museum will host a Summer Family Day from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday with the them of “Swimming with Sharks and Art.” Participants can take part in hands-on art and science projects in the galleries. With “Sharks!” on display in the Science Gallery and “Summer with the Averys [Milton | Sally | March]” showcased in the Main Galleries, visitors are invited to learn all about sharks (including live baby sharks), enjoy play time with Imagination Playground blocks, or create their own postcards or artwork. Additional activities include creating a pinhole camera, shark crafts, and learning all about sharks’ life cycles and eating habits. Swimming with Sharks and Art is for all ages and is free with admission.
Polo season
The Greenwich Polo Club is open for the season on select Sundays this summer. Tickets may be purchased online and range from $40 per car for east lawn general admission seating, $60 per car for grandstand seating, $100 for west lawn seating, $300 for box seats for four and $600 for private cabanas for 12 to 20. The Players’ Lounge VIP costs $150, which includes two guests, VIP parking, bistro and open lawn seating. The field address is 1 Hurlingham Drive. Dogs on leashes are allowed. Juggling and magic show
The Byram Shubert Library will host “Juggling and Magic with Jason” from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Monday in the Community Room. Jason is a stilt walker, unicyclist, break dancer and comedian. After graduating, he began traveling the country as a street performer working crowd participation and high energy physical routines into his act. For more info, call 203-5310426.
Bruce Beginnings
A program for children ages 2.5 to 5 with an adult at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Tuesdays at the Bruce Museum. Explore the museum collections and exhibitions through picture books and hands-on activities.
