Nancy Pelosi to appear in New Haven
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi will make her second appearance in Connecticut in less than three months Saturday.
In New Haven, the California Democrat will join her longtime friend Rep. Rosa DeLauro to discuss equal pay. The event will be held at Gateway Community College at 9:30 a.m. Sat urday.
In March, the House passed the Paycheck Fairness Act, legislation introduced by DeLauro that would increase penalties for violations of equal pay laws, make it illegal for an employer to contractually prevent an employee from disclosing their wages and restrict the use of certain defenses in wage discrimination cases, among other measures. The bill was approved by the Democratled chamber largely along party lines. It has not been called for a vote in the Republicanmajority Senate.
The federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission said Thursday it would stop collecting some wage data broken down by sex and race from larger employers, a move slammed by DeLauro and other Democrats.
“It is outrageous that the Trump Administration is trying to stop collecting critical equal pay data from large companies through the EEO1 form,” DeLauro said this week. “As we have seen from the Senate’s continued inaction on the Housepassed Paycheck Fairness Act, Trump officials are completely uninterested in addressing pay gaps that leave women and people of color behind economically.”
Pelosi’s visit to New Haven is part of a speaker series that will bring her to the districts of House Democrats around the country.
In June, she spoke at a Connecticut State Democratic fundraiser in Hartford, where she promised to fight President Donald Trump and hold his administrations accountable.
DeLauro, 76, and Pelosi, 79, have served in the U.S. House of Representatives together since 1991 and have a close relationship.
