Sacred Heart star E.J. Anosike decides to transfer to Tennessee

- By Jim Fuller

E.J. Anosike, who led the Sacred Heart University men’s basketball program to its first postseason win in 11 seasons, will be playing his final season at the University of Tennessee.

Anosike, who posted team-high marks of 15.7 points and 11.6 rebounds per game during the 201920 campaign, announced his decision on Twitter on Friday.

“I want Thank God and for everyone who helped me get to this point in my career. I am excited for what the future holds for me. With that being said I am excited to announce my commitment to the University of Tennessee. I can’t wait to join my family in Knoxville!”

It will be a homecoming for Anosike. He was a regular at Tennessee women’s basketball games when his sister Nicky won a pair of national championships.

Early in his junior season Anosike recalled his memories of going to the Tennessee games when Nicky played there from 2004-08.

“I went to all the Tennessee games when I was younger,” Anosike said. “I was a ball boy and after the games, I always went in the

locker room, listened to Pat (Summitt) speak and it really showed me what it was to be a winner and be from a winning tradition.”

The 6-foot-6 Anosike is set to graduate from Sacred Heart in May and will be immediately eligible to play at Tennessee. He will fill a need as Tennessee ranked 10th in the SEC in rebounding and offensive rebounding during the 2019-20 season.

Anosike finished second among Division I men’s players with 138 rebounds and was tied for fourth with 383 total rebounds. He had two games with at least 10 offensive rebounds and eight games with at least 15 total rebounds for the Pioneers, helping Sacred Heart record its first 20-win season at the Division I level and finish with a winning record for the first time since the 2009-10 season.
