N.Y. man charged in Byram robbery
GREENWICH — Police made an arrest in a strongarm robbery that occurred at a Byram liquor store late last year, according to court papers in Stamford.
An 84-year-old woman, a co-owner of the store, was shoved during the robbery on the evening of Dec. 27, according to documents in Superior Court in Stamford. She suffered a small cut as a result of the impact against a door frame, court papers said.
Two men were responsible for the robbery, according to an application for an arrest warrant, and they took off on foot into neighboring Port Chester, N.Y., with a liter of Cognac valued at $47. The woman had confronted the two men as they began taking bottles off the shelves and putting them in their backpacks, the court papers stated, and they returned all but one bottle before fleeing.
Rakwan McKinnon, 23, of South Seventh Avenue, Mount Vernon, N.Y., was charged with robbery, assault on an elderly person and larceny.
Police said a group of people were later spotted drinking from a bottle in Port Chester, and officers from that police department assisted in the robbery investigation. According to the court filing, McKinnon was identified as a suspect. Fingerprint evidence was also obtained, according to authorities, and an arrest warrant was later obtained. McKinnon has an arrest record, including a robbery and burglary in New York state, the affidavits states.
McKinnon turned himself in and was arraigned Wednesday. Bail was set at $35,000.
The other suspect remained at large.
