Police: Activist caught stealing sign

- By Robert Marchant

GREENWICH — A woman who has been involved in marches in town this past summer was caught in the act of taking a yard sign for a political candidate in central Greenwich, according to the arrest report

The alleged theft took place at 11:30 p.m Monday at Maple Avenue at East Putnam Avenue, where a proliferation of lawn signs have been erected during the political campaign season, police said. An officer observed the incident as it took place, police said.

Nicole Rincon, 25, of central Greenwich, was charged with larceny and criminal mischief, police said. Police did not say what type of sign it was.

“The offender was observed removing a political sign, bending it in half and taking it into her vehicle,” according to the police report.

Rincon was released without bail on the misdemeanor summons.

Rincon has been active in recent months in Black Lives Matter marches in the area and identified herself to Greenwich Time as an organizer for the regional protest group Justice for Brunch. The organization has held protests in Greenwich, Norwalk and other towns in times and places when people are eating brunch this past summer.

Reached by phone Thursday, Rincon said she had no comment.

Police Capt. Mark Zuccerella said in an email, “Since the end of last week, GPD has been receiving complaints of theft of political signs. We currently have one open investigation and have made an arrest. ... There was a third case we investigated that led to juveniles being responsible.”
