UConn-Maine hockey series set for weekend

- Staff reports

The UConn men’s hockey team’s home series with Maine is being played on Saturday and Sunday, with times to be announced.

The games were originally slated for Friday and Saturday.

UConn opened the season with a 5-1 loss at UMass on Friday before rebounding to win in a shootout in the home opener, even if the game goes down as a 2-2 tie.

East Haven’s Nick Capone was one of four freshmen forwards to suit up for the Huskies. Freshman Cassidy Bowes led the Huskies with two assists in the games and was named the Hockey East Rookie of the Week while classmates Capone and Artem Shlaine combined for 11 shots.

UConn’s home games will be on campus at Freitas Ice Forum.

If the series goes on as planned, the Huskies will get four games in during November, which is four more than the other Division I men’s programs in the state.

Sacred Heart had two games with Army and one at American International College postponed and are set to open the season on Dec. 4 at Holy Cross.

Quinnipiac was supposed to open against AIC on Tuesday, but that game was moved to next month while contests against LIU and Clarkson on Nov. 27 and 29 have been canceled due to a couple of positive COVID-19 tests. So Quinnipiac’s season opener is now against Sacred Heart on Dec. 15.

FAIRFIELD CANCELS NON-CONFERENCE GAME

Fairfield announced that its non-conference men’s basketball game against William & Mary on Dec. 22 has been canceled after some recent changes to the MAAC schedule.

The Stags are set to open the season at Providence on Wednesday at 2 p.m. Fairfield’s first three games are on the road, although the final one is in Fairfield against Sacred Heart on Nov. 29.

The home opener is set to be against Hartford on Dec. 2.

All the home games will be played at Alumni Hall as construction of the Convocation Center has been pushed back a year due to COVID-19.

Yale and the rest of the Ivy League won’t be playing sports during the winter season.
