BJ’s Wholesale Club to hire 140 in state

- By Luther Turmelle

BJ’s Wholesale Club is looking to fill 140 open positions through a hiring event this weekend at the retailer’s 13 Connecticut locations. The hiring event will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

BJ’s is offering a $500 sign-on bonus for new workers and a $500 bonus for its employees who refer someone for a job with the company. To qualify for the referral bonus, the BJ’s employee must be in good standing for 90 days.

Ashley Collazo, a spokeswoman for BJ’s, said the reason for the hiring bonus is because the company is “is looking to attract great talent for parttime and full-time positions.”

David Cadden, a professor emeritus at Quinnipiac University’s School of Business, said companies offering a one-time bonuses to new hires if they stay

with the company beyond a certain period time is seen as an easy way to retain people without having raise the overall pay scale for all employees.

“Companies that do this are seeking workers with a particular skill set and they want to promote loyalty and keep them hanging in there for a while,” Cadden said. “This is not one of those cases where the size of the bonus is related to the kind of work that people are reluctant to do.”

Some of the positions the company is looking to fill include cashiers; clerks for the bakery, deli, meat and produce departments; meat cutters and butchers; and forklift drivers.

The hiring event will be held in an outdoor tent at each location. To apply for a job, a mask is required. If there is a large enough turnout, cell phone numbers will be taken at check-in and a text will be sent to applicants when an interviewer is available.
