Sorenstam, Inkster, Davies to play U.S. Senior Women’s Open
Eleven former U.S. Women’s Open champions will be in the field at the 3rd U.S. Senior Women’s Open to be held July-29-Aug. 1 at Brooklawn Country Club in Fairfield, the United States Golf Association announced on Thursday afternoon.
In addition to three-time champion Annika Sorenstam (1995, 1996 and 2006), who was announced last month, former champions who have entered the championship include Juli Inkster (1999, 2002), Amy Alcott (1980), JoAnne Gunderson Carner (1971, 1976), Hollis Stacy (1977-78 and 1984), and Jan Stephenson (1983).
“Brooklawn Country Club will provide a strong test for a competitive field of USGA champions and many of the game’s greats,” said John Bodenhamer, senior managing director of championships in a statement. “We are excited to continue the tradition of this championship in the City of Fairfield and Connecticut for the first time and we look forward to crowning another worthy champion.”
Also playing are the first two U.S. Senior Women’s Open champions, Laura Davies (2018) and defending champion Helen Alfredsson (2019). The 2020 championship
was scheduled for Brooklawn CC, but was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Other former U.S. Women’s Open champions include Davies (1987), Jane Geddes (1986), Liselotte Neumann (1988), Alison Nicholas (1997) and Jerilyn Britz (1979), who won the title that year at Brooklawn CC.
All former champions are exempt into the field. The entry deadline closed Wednesday. Qualifying for the national event will be held between June 15 and July 15.
ANNIKA FOUNDATION, USGA TO CO-HOST CLINIC
The ANNIKA Foundation — Annika Sorenstam’s
charitable foundation — and the USGA are co-hosting a “Share My Passion” golf clinic at Brooklawn CC on July 27.
Girls between the ages of 6-16 who reside in the New York City metropolitan area can write a letter to Sorenstam expressing their love for the sport and why other girls should take up the game. The top 40 letter writers will be invited to attend the clinic along with either their parent or guardian.
