It’s time to pay property taxes — or face additional interest charges

GREENWICH — The deadline is quickly approaching to pay real estate, motor vehicle and personal property taxes, First Selectman Fred Camillo reminded residents in an email blast.

All tax bills were sent out last month, said town Tax Collector Heather Smeriglio. And payments are due no later than Aug. 2.

On Aug. 3, the interest will revert back to July 1st and a 3% interest charge will be applied, according to Camillo. For each subsequent month that the bill goes unpaid, another 1.5 percent in interest will be applied to the payment.

Payments can be made in person by visiting the Tax Collector’s Office in Greenwich Town Hall from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays.

Also, payments can be completed online by visiting www.greenwichct.org or by mailing a check to: Town of Greenwich, Tax Collector, PO Box 3002, Greenwich, CT 068363002. The town will honor the postmark as allowed by state statute.

Checks must be made out to the Town of Greenwich and should include the bill number. Online payments incur a fee of 95 cents for an electronic funds transfer or a 2.95 percent convenience fee when using a credit card, which goes to the vendor processing the payments, not the town.

If you did not receive a bill or if you have questions, contact the Tax Collector’s Department at 203-622-7891 or taxcollector@greenwichct.org.

Residents can view a copy of their bill online under the Tax Collector’s section of the town website at www.greenwichct.gov. It can be printed out and mailed in or brought in with a payment.

Unlike last year, no grace period will be extended for payments, according to Smeriglio. Last year by executive order of Gov. Ned Lamont, Smeriglio was able to establish a 90-day grace period to give people more time to send in their July and January tax payments during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last year, the town saw a 99.2 percent collection rate, Smeriglio said.

“That’s the money we use to run the town. That was a phenomenal response,” she said.
