Report: CT man told police ‘he deserved it,’ after pushing child

- By Lisa Backus

DEEP RIVER — A local man accused of cursing at an 11-year-old boy and pushing him off his bicycle this week told state troopers the child “deserved it,” according to a police report of the incident.

Jameson Chapman, 48, of Deep River, was on probation for his third operating under the influence arrest when the incident occurred Monday, court records show.

Chapman was ordered during his arraignment Tuesday to seek behavioral health treatment, court records show. He also cannot have contact with the 11-yearold or the child’s friend who captured videos of the incident. One of the videos shows the man cursing and yelling at the 11-yearold to “get the (expletive) out of my town.” A second video shows the man pushing the child off his bike in the middle of the road.

State police arrested Chapman soon after the incident on assault, risk of injury to a child and breach of peace charges.

“He deserved it,” Chapman told state troopers as he was being processed, according to the police report.

According to the report, the boys first encountered Chapman as they were riding their bikes to a Main Street restaurant around 5:30 p.m. Monday. Chapman became upset because the boys bumped into him, the report stated.

According to the report, Chapman raised his voice to tell the kids to watch where they were going and asked if they were from Connecticut.

The boys then went to a convenience store on Main Street where they encountered Chapman again, the report said.

They told police Chapman began to yell and curse at them, the report stated. They waited in the parking lot for Chapman to leave so they could head home, but wound up going in the same direction as him, the report said.

Chapman confronted them a third time, cursed at the 11-year-old and pushed him off his bike onto the pavement, state police said in the report. The boy’s friend also captured that encounter on video. The 11-year-old sustained cuts and scrapes on his legs and arm when he was shoved to the ground, state police said.

Chapman was recognized on the video by troopers who had responded to a report of an intoxicated man causing a disturbance in Deep River, the report said. He was located and taken into custody at a local condo complex, state police said.

Chapman has a criminal history that includes three operating while under the influence convictions and arrests for violation of a protective order, assault, illegal discharge of a firearm and reckless endangerment, according to state police and court records.

He had violated probation for a third operating under the influence arrest, but had resolved the case when he pleaded guilty on April 26, court records show. His probation was continued after the plea, records show.

Chapman was released on a promise to appear after his arraignment Tuesday.
