In-person games attract largest crowd in months

- COMMENTARY

Perhaps the best news of the week was that on Monday, a total of 19 tables turned out for two afternoon games at the Bridge Deck.

For the first time in several months, no Greenwich players placed in the overall rankings of a duplicate game at either the Bridge Deck or the Harte’s Club. Oddly, it does not appear that any local players even participated in either of the White Plains clubs during the past week.

Perhaps the best news of the week was that on Monday, a total of 19 tables turned out for two afternoon games at the Bridge Deck — one an open game, and the other a game limited to nonLife Masters.

This is possibly the biggest turnout for a local club game in this area since face-to-face duplicate games resumed following the pandemic.

Today’s quiz: Here is the second in the current series of quizzes designed to test your knowledge of basic bridge percentages. In the two following problems, simply select which of the three choices best answers the question posed.

1. Your partner has opened with one notrump, promising a balanced hand containing not more than one doubleton. Partner will open one notrump on hands containing a five-card major suit.

Which of the following three distributions is partner most likely to hold, and which is the second most likely?

a) 4-3-3-3 b) 4-4-3-2 c) 5-3-3-2

2. In connection with the preceding question, what percentage of all hands dealt will contain one of these three distributions?

a) about one-third b) about one-half c) about two-thirds

Answers:

1. b) and then c), with a) being the least likely of the three.

2. The 4-4-3-2 distribution occurs in 21.5 percent of all deals; the 5-3-3-2 in 15.5 percent; and the 4-3-3-3 in 10.5 percent. This comes to a total of 47.5 percent, so the correct answer is b).
