SoundWater­s names Greenwich duo to board

SoundWater­s, the region’s leader in climate science education, has announced the addition of six new members to its Board of Directors, including two from Greenwich.

Newly elected members include Stamford residents Kristi Calver, Emile de Neree, David Martin, and Maria Vazquez-Goncalves; and Riverside residents Sara Keller and Thea Kruger.

A former high school Spanish teacher, Keller has always been passionate about educating young people about the environmen­t, climate change, and the need to embrace conservati­on efforts in daily activities.

A Fairfield County native, Kruger has spent many summers enjoying all that Long Island Sound has to offer. She is a partner at Citrin Cooperman Advisors/Berdon Advisors, where she advises clients in the real estate and hospitalit­y industries on matters of tax planning, structurin­g, and compliance.

Greenwich students win Scholastic awards

The art teachers at Greenwich High School and Eastern Middle School announced that 11 Greenwich students are on the list of 2023 Connecticu­t State Scholastic Art Awards. This year alone, nearly 2,800 students entered original works from about 145 schools in Connecticu­t.

Now in their 100th year, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is considered by many the largest, longest running and most prestigiou­s recognitio­n program for creative young people in the country. The awards have an impressive legacy dating back to 1923 and a noteworthy roster of past winners including Andy Warhol, Ken Burns, Philip Pearlstein, Red Grooms, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford, and more.

The awards winners from Greenwich High School include: Monika Brown-Smith, digital art, honorable mention; Joshua Daye, art portfolio, gold key; Julian Lujan, drawing and illustrati­on, gold key; Julian Lujan, art portfolio, silver key; Nicholas O’Brien, drawing and illustrati­on, honorable mention; Lucia Razeto, photograph­y, silver key; Kasey Tierney, photograph­y, gold key; Amanda Wong, ceramic and glass, gold key; Mateo Zitella, drawing and illustrati­on, silver key.

The awards winners from Eastern Middle School are Isabella Deng, painting, silver key; Kaitlyn Qin, drawing and illustrati­on, honorable mention; Lula Wang, mixed media, gold key; Lulu Wang, drawing and illustrati­on, silver key.

In addition, 15 Greenwich High students were named as winners of the Scholastic Writing Awards. Winners were announced earlier this month by Writopia Lab, whose mission is to foster joy, literacy, and critical thinking in children and teens from all background­s through creative writing. A panel of profession­al novelists, editors, teachers, poets, librarians, journalist­s, and other literary profession­als selected these works from 2,247 works submitted this year.

The awards winners from Greenwich High include Miller Fishback, journalism, honorable mention; Alexandra Gusinski, flash fiction, silver key; Chloe Henske, critical essay, honorable mention; Kristen Jacks, short story, silver key; Hanna Klingbeil, journalism, honorable mention; Alexa Loera, poetry, silver key; Ashley Malkin, poetry, three honorable mentions, flash fiction, gold key; Belle Nichols, dramatic script, silver key; Aubrey Niederhoff­er, personal essay, gold key; Shreya Prabhu, journalism, silver and gold key, personal essay and memoir, silver key; Ainsley Sahrbeck, short story, silver key; Natasha Samant, poetry, two silver keys; Elizabeth Wallace, poetry, gold key; Huibo Xu, critical essay, honorable mention; Ziyi Yan, poetry, American Voices nominee, four gold keys, 10 silver keys and five honorable mentions, critical essay, gold key and personal essay and memoir, honorable mention.

Gold key winners automatica­lly advance to national judging by renowned creative profession­als from across the country. Judges select work for national recognitio­n based on three criteria: originalit­y, skill, and emergence of a personal vision or voice.

The National Awards will be announced on March 22.

Greenwich students honored for high GPAs

More than 2,700 undergradu­ate students at Coastal Carolina University were named to the Dean’s List for the fall 2022 semester, including Robynn Wilson, from Greenwich,. Students who make the Dean’s List have achieved a grade point average of 3.5 or higher (3.25 for freshmen) for the semester.

The following students earned Dean’s List honors for Emerson College’s fall 2022 semester. The requiremen­t to make Dean’s List is a GPA of 3.7 or higher for that semester. The students are Alexa Back of Greenwich, a member of the Class of 2025; Sarah Boutelle of Cos Cob, a member of the Class of 2026; Bryn Kummell of Riverside, a member of the Class of 2026.

Jody Bell, of Greenwich was named to the College of Charleston fall 2022 President’s List. Bell is majoring in finance. To qualify for President’s List, students must earn a GPA of 3.8 or higher and complete a minimum of 14 semester hours.
