John Wallace Roberts
John Wallace Roberts, our beloved husband, father and grandfather, and longtime resident of Greenwich died peacefully at home on March 3, 2023. He was born on August 3, 1932, in Stamford, Connecticut, the son of Gladys Jessup Roberts and Samuel Wallace Roberts. He attended Stamford High School and graduated from Andover Academy in 1950. He earned his BA at Yale University in 1954, and his law degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1958 where he was a member of the Board of Editors of the
University of Pennsylvania Law Review.
After serving as a trial attorney in the US Department of Justice and as a law clerk to the Honorable Irving Ben Cooper, US District Court, Southern District of New York, John joined the
law firm of Ivy, Barnum,O’Mara and Nickerson in 1962. In 1973, he established his own law practice in Stamford. John continued to practice law, enjoying the theory and application of justice, as well as the collaborative process, until 2022.
As deeply as he was devoted to the law, he was even more devoted to his family. John had a kind and generous soul. He loved learning and was endlessly curious about the history of
places and people. He passed on his thirst for knowledge to his daughters and grandchildren.
John loved to recount stories, including of his life growing up in Stamford. John enjoyed genealogy and was especially proud of the long history his ancestors had in settling in
Connecticut in the 1600s. He relished time spent on Martha’s Vineyard and in the Adirondacks and visiting his daughters and his extended family on both the east and west coasts.
John was an active member of many churches in town, including Stanwich Congregational Church, St. Michael’s Parish, and St. Catherine’s of Siena & St. Agnes Parish.
He had a strong faith in God and in humanity and was proud that he converted to Catholicism in 2011. His love and tight hugs will live on in the hearts of his wife, Elizabeth (Betty), four
daughters, and 12 grandchildren. A mass and celebration of John’s life will be held at St. Michael’s Church in Greenwich on April 3, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider
