Police: Man charged with DUI for driving 100 mph on I-95
GREENWICH — A Stamford man was arrested early Wednesday after being caught driving at 100 mph while under the influence of alcohol, police said.
In a release, Connecticut State Police said Edwin Garcia-Castillo, 28, was charged with reckless driving, operating under the influence and failure to slow or move over for an emergency vehicle.
Police said a state trooper assigned to Troop G in Bridgeport was parked on the right shoulder of Interstate 95 southbound near Exit 3 in Greenwich at 1:13 p.m. concluding an unrelated motor vehicle stop, when they observed a Toyota Tacoma pass their cruiser at an excessive rate of speed.
In doing so, police said, the
Toyota driver failed to slow down or move over for the trooper’s stationary emergency vehicle. After completing the prior traffic stop, they said, the trooper followed the Toyota and clocked the vehicle traveling at speeds in excess of 100 mph in the posted 55 mph zone.
Police said the vehicle was also swerving across the travel lanes in an erratic manner before exiting the highway at Exit 2 in Greenwich. They said police stopped the vehicle and identified Garcia-Castillo as the driver.
Garcia-Castillo’s eyes appeared to be bloodshot and also detected the strong odor of alcoholic beverages emanating from within the vehicle, police said, and while he initially denied drinking alcoholic beverages, he later he admitted to doing so before driving. They said he agreed to participate in a field sobriety test and failed it.
Based upon the information obtained during the on-scene investigation, police said, GarciaCastillo was taken into custody and transported to Troop G where he was processed and charged. They said he was released on $1,000 bond and is scheduled to appear at the Superior Court in Stamford on March 27.
