On Wednesday, Oct. 14, the FFA chapters in Cimarron, Texas and Beaver Counties traveled to Balko, Okla., to compete in the Regional Opening and Closing Ceremonies and the Regional Greenhand Quiz Contests.

In the Opening and Closing Ceremonies Contest, members in the eighth or ninth grade play the role of the officer team and perform the opening and closing ceremonies, including the gavel taps. The purpose of the contest is to emphasize the reason for their meetings, the duties of the officers and the significance of recognition given to individuals. Each member must have their part memorized, rehearsed and conducted with pride and dignity.

In the Opening and Closing Ceremonies Contest, Boise City FFA placed first, Hooker FFA placed second and Guymon FFA placed third. The first and second place teams both get to continue on to the state contest which will be held in Norman, Okla., on October 20.

The Greenhand Quiz Contest is for freshman FFA Members only. The members perform a written test covering all aspects of FFA, both past and present. At this particular contest, if they were in the top percentage of students on the written portion of the contest, they then stood up and were asked to answer questions orally. The top two students in the Greenhand Quiz Contest were Hadley Taylor and Jessica Woodbury of Balko, Okla. Taylor and Woodbury will both be competing at the state contest in Norman, Okla., as well.
