Molly is a lap dog who thinks she’s tougher than she is

- FROM THE BACK FORTY By James Lockhart

We’ve got a house dog we are all fond of. Her name is Molly.

I call her Molly the moocher. She stares you down while you are eating, cooking or walking into the kitchen. She’s a big time moocher. She might weigh ten pounds soaking wet.

She is basically a rat terrier. She’s black with some white and brown around her face, feet and belly.

Molly’s also got some other dog breeds in her, but she’s 90% rat terrier. Like all rat terriers she thinks she’s ten-foot tall and bullet proof.

Molly will bark and growl at all the outside dogs. I think she kind of tells them they are a bunch of losers that live outside and have no sophistication.

At least that what it sounds like to me when the dogs get in an argument. Who knows, I don’t speak dog, or cow or horse for that matter.

The other day, I decided I should put out some of those yellow and red salt blocks. There’s a couple of feeders I have built especially for salt and mineral.

Sure enough, I get the blocks out and some cows started licking away at them. These cows were really eating on the yellow blocks.

Molly came running up about the time these cows are chomping away at these blocks. Their tongues on the salt blocks sounded kind of eerie, if you didn’t know what it was.

Sure enough, Molly doesn’t pay attention and ends up under the mineral feeder. When she hears this eerie sound, what does she do? She hunkers down and lets out the most pitiful whine you’ve ever heard.

At first, I thought a snake had bit her or a maybe a ground hog had her pinned under that feeder. It took me a few seconds to figure it out, but once I did, I couldn’t help but start laughing at her.

She’s smart enough to know she’s being made fun of. That just made her want more sympathy. The whining turned into a sort of howl and before long my wife was coming to save her baby little dog. Then she figured it out and she really started laughing at her.

Molly finally shut up, laid down and gave us the death stare. Like really, guys, you’re laughing at me while I’m being attacked by alien cow lickers?

It took a little coaxing, but we got her to come out from under the feeder and she ran in between wifey’s legs. Hmmf, lap dogs, they’re tough so long as they aren’t out of their safe zone.

That evening, wifey teased her and Molly hammed it up good in the recliner with her.

Molly the mooch. Maybe, it should be Molly the attentionseeking mooch.

It sure gave us something

Molly the mooch.

to laugh about that evening. You never know what little things pop up on the farm.

Some days are sure funny though, especially when you’ve got a full fledged lap dog around.
