Richard Gray:

Oct. 2, 1940-Feb. 19, 2024

We celebrate the life of Richard Gene Gray, a true cowboy whose life was a testament to the belief in hard work and the love of the land. Richard, 83 of Guymon passed away peacefully on Feb. 19, 2024.

Richard was born on Oct. 2, 1940, to Viola Battenfield and Gene Gray in Amarillo, Texas.

At age 19, Richard used his charm, wit and a lot of luck to marry Anita Avent on Sept. 28, 1960, in Pleasant Valley Baptist Church. Richard and Anita demonstrated the strength of their love and marriage for 64 years.

Early in their marriage, Richard and Anita settled in the Unity community after Richard found the perfect spot for their home while riding horseback for David Long.

Richard spent much of his life working on ranches throughout the Oklahoma and Texas panhandles. He also worked for the State of Oklahoma as a livestock inspector for over 20 years.

Richard was a horse trader and a storyteller. If you found yourself riding around with Richard, he would be sharing a story with you about many friends, places or adventures in the area. You will not need to look far in this region to find some fence line, ranch or friend that Richard has somehow touched. Many laughs, advice and wild cowboy stories can be connected to Richard, whose legacy will endure like the endless expanse of the prairie he called home.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents Viola and Gene Gray and his stepfather, John Thrash, and all of his siblings, Karan Jackson, Byron Thrash, Ranny Thrash, Craig Thrash and grandson Charlie Reaves.

Richard is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Anita, who stood by his side through ranch life, sharing in life’s joys and sorrows. Together, they raised three boys and built a home filled with warmth, kindness and countless cherished memories.

Richard is a hero to his sons, Joe, Ron and Spur. He was always so proud to tell someone about his boys and some adventurous tale.

Richard’s legacy and spirit will forever live on through his adoring grandchildren: Jodi, Cagney, Sage, Cord, Raven, Rusty, Laramie, Rontoo and 19 greatgrandchildren: Ray, Jet, Pat, Jud, Will, Jaylee, Rowdie, Dusti, Alyssa, Kway, Porter, Rustyn, McKenzie, Aidyn, Graham, Laynie, Cohen, Noah and Eli.

A funeral service in memory of Richard will be held at 2 p.m. March 2, located at Stinnett Methodist Church, 420 West 6th Street, Stinnett, Texas 79083.

After the service, refreshments will be served. Friends and family are invited to share cherished memories.
