CAPITOL POLICE TAKING NEW THREAT FOR TODAY SERIOUSLY
The Capitol Police are preparing for another assault on the Capitol building today after obtaining intelligence of a potential plot by a militia group, just two months after a deadly siege on the building by a mob of Trump loyalists and extremists.
“The United States Capitol Police Department is aware of and prepared for any potential threats toward members of Congress or toward the Capitol complex,” the agency said in a statement issued on Wednesday.“We have obtained intelligence that shows a possible plot to breach the Capitol by an identified militia group on Thursday, March 4.”
“We are taking the intelligence seriously,” the Capitol Police said.
But one senior federal official said previously that officials did not deem there to be a specific, credible threat from the online chatter. Another law enforcement official on Wednesday described the recent threat as “aspirational.”
Still, the threat by the militia group prompted the Capitol Police to increase the number of officers at the building, where a fence installed after the attack on Jan. 6 has remained.
In response to the threat, the House canceled its session scheduled for today and moved up legislative votes to Wednesday night. The Senate stuck with its plan to be in session today.
Extremists have claimed that March 4 is the“true Inauguration Day”when former President Donald Trump will be sworn in for a second term.
