Better Business Bureau offers tips for hiring a photographer
May is National Photograph Month. Photographs are special mementos that connect us to our past and remind us of the people, places, feelings and stories that are important to us. Plus, photographs last from generation to generation and are something your descendants can look at to remember you.
Therefore, if you’re looking to preserve a special memory, it’s important to hire a photographer that you trust won’t miss a beat of your special event. Whether you’re looking to take photos for a work event, party or your wedding, the right photographer can make sure memories of your event are timeless.
Better Business Bureau offers these tips for hiring a photographer:
■ Research businesses before hiring them. Look at websites, portfolios and online reviews.
■ Set a budget and only consider photographers that fit within your budget.
■ Ask friends and family for recommendations.
■ Check credentials, such as education and experience.
■ Determine if the photographer is a member of a professional trade association.
■ Ask if the photographer has done the type of photography you need and is comfortable with it.
■ Pick someone whose style fits with your aesthetic. Does it fit what you envision for your final images?
■ Make sure you’re comfortable with the photographer you choose. If you aren’t relaxed around him or her, it will show in your photos.
■ Ask about the process. How does he or she edit the photographs? Is it in a style you prefer?
■ Get an estimate. Make sure it includes all extra charges and fees that may apply.
■ Provide a shot list, which makes it less likely important moments you want to capture end up being missed.
■ Inquire if the photographer is familiar with the venue. He or she may want to visit beforehand to get the lay of the land.
■ Understand your rights to the images. Know whether you will have re-licensing rights and where you’re allowed to publish the photographer’s photos.
■ Confirm how you’ll receive the files and when. Know whether they intend to send them through online file-sharing websites or via DVD or flash drive.
■ Get a contract and read it thoroughly.
■ Pay with credit card to protect yourself from any problems down the line.
