This 2019 documentary from filmmakers Clara and
Julia Kuperberg examines the once-common movie practice of casting Caucasian actors as Asian characters, using makeup to tint their skin and alter the shape of their eyes. German-born Luise Rainer won an Oscar playing an iconic Chinese character in “The Good Earth,” while Mickey Rooney delivered a notorious caricature of a Japanese man in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Hollywood was quick to respond with racist projects used as wartime propaganda.
