- ZACHARY SMITH, ADVANCE OHIO MEDIA

Ohio ranked fifth in the nation for the number of car crash fatalities that occurred in 2021, according to a new estimate from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Despite being the seventh-largest state, Ohio’s 1,351 automobile fatalities outpace more populous states like New York and Pennsylvania and nearly ties with Illinois.

Ohio road deaths increased by 9.8%, up from 1,230 in 2020. However, this was below the 10.5% increase for the entire country. Idaho is estimated to have the largest increase of 33.6%, up to 286 deaths in 2021 from 214 in 2020.
