COOL FOR THE SUMMER
WHO SAYS THE SEASON’S FASHION IS ALL SUNSHINE AND ROSES? ROSETTA GETTY KEEPS IT CHIC WITH OUTRÉ SHAPES AND SUBDUED COLORS.
Who says the season’s fashion is all sunshine and roses? Rosetta Getty keeps it chic with outré shapes and subdued colors.
Rosetta Getty is her own best model. A three-piece chenille suit from her fall collection might appear unflattering when viewed on a rack. When worn by Getty at May’s CFDA Awards, though, the ensemble proved sleek and forgiving. In keeping with that notion, her line is full of surprises and off-kilter beauty. Those factors have made it a favorite of stars like Alicia Vikander and Elisabeth Moss and attracted the kind of ardent fans that have allowed it to grow into a major fashion world presence within a mere three years of launching.
Southampton boutique Copious Row has witnessed the enthusiasm firsthand, rapidly selling out of the line early in the season. Getty, a Los Angeles resident married to actor Balthazar Getty, knew the store by reputation and, based on the presence of like-minded lines like Roksanda and Baja East on its shelves, felt it would be a great home for her pieces. Among her favorites from the season are a color-blocked blazer and a one-shouldered dress done in gingham, that fabric being a narrative thread through the pre-fall line. “All of the gingham pieces I love. I’ve loved gingham since I used it
in kidswear 20 years ago,” she explains.
For the fall collection, Getty had a bit of help by way of a collaboration with the Berlinbased artist Alicja Kwade. The lines, patterns, and textures were informed by the metals and stones used in Kwade’s sculptures. Pursuing the partnership was a major step for Getty, who describes it as an intimate process. “You’re really asking of yourself and asking of another artist who has a very, very clear point of view to bring those things together and, hopefully, in harmony. It’s a big undertaking,” she says. “When we began, I had no idea if she was going to be open to this. She actually knew of the brand, and she was a fan, so that was really great and surprising.”
The result was a fall range that Getty was truly satisfied with. And that satisfaction is not easily won. “I’m really critical with myself, and I’m a perfectionist,” she explains. “I’m never satisfied, which I think is probably why my customer likes my product—because I push, I push, I push.” Copious Row, 28C Jobs Lane, Southampton, 631-488-4555; copiousrow.com; rosettagetty.com
