Eastern clinches LEC title in women’s volleyball

Top-seeded Eastern Connecticu­t (23-6) won the Little East Conference women’s volleyball championsh­ip, defeating Keene State 3-1 at Willimanti­c. Eastern won by scores of 25-19, 19-25, 25-18, 25-21. Abby Stern had 22 kills and Leah Sopneski 25 assists for Eastern. Keene State is 22-10. … Darion Richeme scored a pair of unassisted first-half goals and Western Connecticu­t’s men’s soccer team defeated Eastern 2-1 on Saturday in a Little East Tournament semifinal in Willimanti­c. Western (15-3-3) will play Keene State, which defeated UMass Boston 1-0, in Sunday’s final at noon at Willimanti­c. Daniel Szabo had five saves for the Colonials. For Eastern (15-3-0), Max Parent scored after 89 minutes of play. … The Middlebury field hockey team (16-1), the top seed, advanced to the NESCAC championsh­ip game for the eighth straight year by defeating Trinity, 1-0, in Middlebury, Vt. Trinity falls to 12-5 on the year and will find its NCAA Tournament destiny with Monday morning’s selection show. Lori Berger made five saves for Trinity. … At Brunswick, Maine, the Wesleyan volleyball team saw its title defense come to an end as the secondseed­ed Cardinals were upset by thirdseede­d Amherst College in the NESCAC semifinals at Bowdoin, 3-0. The Mammoths (22-4) won by scores of 25-21, 25-21 and 25-22. Wesleyan (17-5) awaits its NCAA Tournament fate when the selection show airs on Monday. … The Central Connecticu­t men’s soccer team (1-13-1) fell to Bryant, 1-0, on Senior Day at CCSU Soccer Field. Prior to the game, Central recognized seniors Louis Beddouri, Sebastian Calderon, Carson D’Ambrosio, Danny LoBello, Quentin Lux, Rodrigo Giraldo Salvador and James Thompkins.
