O’Neil leads Yale in win

Bulldogs defeat UConn 6-3 in consolatio­n game

BELFAST, Ireland — The Yale hockey team scored three goals in the second period and three more in the third to defeat UConn 6-3 on Saturday in the consolatio­n game of the Northern Irish Connection­s Friendship Four tournament.

Yale's Kevin O'Neil led the way for the Bulldogs with two goals, including what turned out to be the game-winner 1:36 into the third period.

UConn took the lead on Miles Gendron's first goal of the season late in the first period.

Yale tied it just 16 seconds into the second on a goal by Luke Stevens and then took a 2-1 lead on Brett Jewell's goal.

The Huskies' Alexander Payusov tied the game with his ninth, before O'Neil put Yale back on top with his first of two.

Max Kalter scored UConn's final goal, at 8:01 of the third.

The Huskies (5-8-1), after an 0-2-0 trip to Ireland, have now lost four in a row. Yale, with a win and tie in the tournament, is 3-2-2.

Tomas Vomacka had 31 saves for UConn, while Sam Tucker had 34 for Yale.

The Huskies return to action on Friday with a Hockey East game at UMass.

Patrik Laine scored five goals in the Jets' 8-4 victory over the Blues on Saturday night in St. Louis, two short of the 97-year-old NHL record.

It was the 61st five-goal game in league history. Darryl Sittler of the Maple Leafs was the last player to score six goals in a game, on April 22, 1976 against the Bruins.

Laine's five-goal game gives him a league-leading 16 goals in 10 November games.

Sam Reinhart and Tage Thompson scored in a sevenround shootout to lift the Sabres over the Red Wings 3-2. It was the Sabres' ninth straight win. ... Andreas Johnsson recorded a hat trick midway through the first period and the Leafs routed the Flyers 6-0. Garret Sparks made 35 saves for his second career shutout. ...
