Blueprint for a Jets victory

- By Manish Mehta New York Daily News

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Adam Gase will walk through the gates of The Evil Empire on Sunday with virtually no chance of winning. Some folks cashing Woody Johnson’s checks are even privately wondering how ugly it will get for the 23-point-underdog Jets.

When the football world lampoons you, mocks you and wonders aloud whether you’ll get historically embarrassed, there’s only one way to proceed:

Gase & Co. should embrace this daunting challenge against the Pats knowing that nobody actually expects them to keep this game competitive. So, be creative, take chances and, above all else, don’t be afraid to push the envelope.

If it works, you’ll pull off the biggest upset of the decade. If it doesn’t, who cares? It’s house money.

“Man, I’ve been hearing that going on three years,” Pro Bowl safety Jamal Adams said about being written off on Sunday. “When have they given us a chance? … I’m used to it.”

Gase, the supposed offensive guru, must be bold, aggressive and force the issue.

However, this might be Gase’s biggest challenge to date as a head coach with third-string quarterback Luke Falk getting thrown into Belichick’s scary brew.

The Patriots, who have outscored opponents, 76-3, in the first two weeks, are trying to become the first team since the 1937 Chicago Bears to not allow a touchdown in the first three games. New England would set the record for fewest points allowed in the first three games in the Super Bowl era if they hold the Jets to nine or fewer points.

“We can’t make no mistakes,” defensive tackle Steve McLendon said. “Zero. You almost got to play perfect.”

Many people are wondering whether the Jets will break their franchise record for most lopsided loss. Walt Michaels’ team got trounced by the — who else — Patriots, 56-3, in Week 2 of the 1979 season.

Jets players have publicly put on a brave face.

“I don’t sense a panic,” Le’Veon Bell said. “We have 14 more games. We can win 14 games. I’m confident in this team to win 14 games… Trying to go 1-0 this week, understanding that challenge ahead of us. Those are guys are one of the best dynasties to ever play the game. So, we got to go out there and play football and match their intensity.”

Win 14 in a row? That’s the kind of delusion that this franchise needs right now. Believing that they can actually beat this juggernaut is required. Otherwise, the game is lost before the first snap.
