Police: Man arrested in shooting of sister’s ex

Charges include assault, reckless endangerment

HARTFORD – An East Hartford man has been arrested and charged with shooting his older sister’s ex-boyfriend in July in Hartford’s South End.

Saul Tirado, 28, was arrested Thursday and charged with first-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment and carrying a pistol without a permit, according to Hartford police records.

He was held Friday on $375,000 bond.

Police responded to reports of shots fired and a car crash just after 1 a.m. July 19 outside a home on Julius Street in the South End and found 42-yearold Freddie Sanchez shot through the thigh, police said.

Sanchez was transported to Hartford Hospital, and police found three cars damaged by a crash and gunfire along with eight .380-caliber shell casings, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

On scene investigators met Tirado’s sister, Sanchez’s exgirlfriend, who lived in the home and later explained that earlier in the night she had seen her brother working on his girlfriend’s white Toyota Camry outside the house, the document shows.

Around 1 a.m., she recalled hearing gunshots and a loud bang like a car crash, according to the affidavit. When she went outside, she saw Sanchez approaching her wounded and saw her brother’s girlfriend’s car “speeding away.”

“Freddie Sanchez told her, ‘I got shot. I got shot. Your brother is going to get it,’” according to her account to investigators.

Sanchez and Tirado had known each other for eight years and are both members of the Los Solidos gang, but the two “had been beefing” and Sanchez previously had damaged the tires on Tirado’s girlfriend’s car, Tirado’s sister told police.

At the hospital, Sanchez told officers “he was 100 percent sure” Tirado had shot him and identified him when shown a photo, according to the arrest warrant affidavit.

Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Tirado and located him Thursday in Manchester, where he was taken into custody without incident, police said Friday.
