GLASTONBURY — One person died Friday night in a fire that consumed a Glastonbury apartment.

The fire heavily damaged one apartment on the second floor at about 8:30 p.m. in the Griswold Gardens complex near Griswold and Prospect streets, Glastonbury Fire Chief Michael Thurz told reporters gathered at the scene late Friday.

Firefighters were on the scene within three minutes of receiving the call and reported light to moderate smoke at first, Thurz said.

But when crews went into the apartment to attack the flames, they found a person inside the apartment had been killed, he said.

The victim had not been identified late Friday, and fire marshals were on the scene investigating the cause.

No firefighters were injured, and the area around the apartment was shut down for most of the night.

Officials did not immediately know how many residents of the building would be displaced, citing an ongoing evaluation of the damage inside the building to any units other than the one where the fire began, Thurz said.
