Tailoring your wardrobe can transform your look

- By Aramide Esubi Tribune Content Agency

One of the reasons celebrities always look so good is that their clothes fit well.

Tailors are a given for stars because they have access to perks like private shoppers and stylists. But chances are you’ve probably never had anything tailored besides the bridesmaid dress you wore at your best friend’s wedding.

Most people do not realize that some strategic adjustments to a few key pieces can help you revitalize a stale wardrobe, save money and look like a million bucks.

If you’ve ever wondered why none of your clothes seem to hang just right, the truth is, it’s probably not you. Most retail garments are made with a generic form and measurements in mind. But very few people have that average form, so when you put on clothing it’s most likely not going to fit perfectly.

Unfortunately, today we have come to think of tailoring anything beyond a hem as unusual. For the last few decades, we have been trying to make our bodies fit the clothes when, in reality, we should be making the clothes fit our bodies.

With a great tailor, your clothing shows off all the best features of your specific shape. The simplest changes, such as an inch tuck at the waist or adding darts to a shirt, can make a huge difference in appearance.

I remember the first time I took a dress and a jumpsuit to a tailor, and the results were amazing. Items that had hung in my closet unworn because they were too long or too loose now looked like they were made just for me. To say I was hooked is an understatement. I couldn’t wait to raid my own closet in search of what else could be nipped, tucked and given new life.

Tailors and alteration experts also understand different types of fabrics, fit and cuts and can offer advice on the best type of suit, shirt and pants for your physique. When your clothing fits you properly you have more confidence, and it shows both professionally and personally. You won’t feel as though you are hiding under baggy clothing.

If I’ve convinced you to try tailoring, don’t worry about bringing your entire wardrobe to the tailor. My suggestion is to take basic, well-made staples and have them modified to fit. They should be classic cuts from quality fabrics.

Depending on what is involved, tailoring can be pricey, so avoid buying trendy garments that require alterations and likely won’t be worn more than a few times, and shop in stores that offer free alteration services. Store credit cards, including from Nordstrom and Banana Republic, offer free alterations for users. Other stores, including J. Crew and Barneys, offer free tailoring on many items.

You should also check with your dry cleaner, as some of them will tailor your clothes.

Never again try to squeeze yourself into today’s preconceived and mass-produced notions of clothing sizes. Do yourself a favor and find a tailor to transform your wardrobe.
