Fitzpatrick could deliver crushing blow to Gase, Jets

- By Manish Mehta New York Daily News

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — He’s a brainy, bearded wonder who can be magical or tragical.

He’s a hairy nuisance, an eternal underdog with enough skill and savvy to ruin your day.

He’s a feel-good story for every nerd that never thought he could foil the jocks.

Ryan Fitzpatrick could carve out a new rock bottom for the Jets when he rolls into town with his overgrown facial hair and killer mindset. New York has found creative ways to sink to embarrassing depths this season. Getting swept by Fitzpatrick’s Dolphins would take Adam Gase to the center of the Earth.

There would be no way lower to go for this lost franchise that will miss the playoffs for a ninth consecutive season. Fitzpatrick, who brought fleeting joy to the Jets not that long ago, has proven to be a thorn in many sides during his eight-team, 13-year journey through the NFL.

“Fitz is the guy you want out there in a high-risk, high-reward situation,” former teammate Jordan Jenkins told the Daily News. “He plays his best ball when he truly just has nothing to lose and he can just be himself out there. He’s going to take the risk. He might get a turnover here and there, but as long as his touchdown output is more than his turnovers, he’s going to do what it takes.

Some guys might toe the line and not take a chance. Fitz is going to take that chance. He’s a gritty guy.”

It would be fitting if a 37-year-old father of seven who could kick your derriere in a Rubik’s Cube challenge delivers a final soul-crushing blow to the Jets.

It might just happen despite the fact that Dolphins aren’t very good, either.
