CCSU falls to Maine, remains winless

Andrew Fleming scored 18 points and Maine made enough free throws down the stretch to hold off Central Connecticu­t 66-64 on Saturday at New Britain.

Fleming sank 6 of 10 shots from the floor and made 6 of 8 at the free-throw line for the Black Bears (3-6). He added four rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Myles Baker buried a 3-pointer to pull the winless Blue Devils (0-9) within 63-61 with 1:49 left to play, but Peter Stumer hit two free throws with 21 seconds to go to push Maine’s lead to 65-61. Baker delivered on a 3 to get CCU within a point with 12 seconds left. Fleming made 1 of 2 foul shots 2 seconds later and Nedelijko Prijovic blocked Baker’s 3-pointer on the final shot of the game.

Baker topped the Blue Devils with 15 points.

At Hamden, Rich Kelly poured in a season-high 36 points and sparked a late run as

Quinnipiac beat New Hampshire.

Jayden Martinez buried a 3pointer with 4:23 left in the game to give New Hampshire a 60-58 lead. Seth Pinkney’s dunk pulled the Bobcats (3-4) even at 60 and Kelly scored seven straight points to push the advantage to 67-60 with 1:20 remaining. The Wildcats (5-5) couldn’t get closer than three points from there.

At Bethlehem, Pa., Paul Atkinson had 16 points and 11 rebounds and Azar Swain had 19 points for Yale (8-3), which earned its fifth straight win. Jordan Bruner added 14 points and six rebounds. Eric Monroe had nine assists for the visiting team.

Women

At West Hartford, the Hawks were outscored 17-5 in the third quarter and lost to NJIT 61-52 to remain winless at 0-9. Jada Lewis led Hartford with 20 points and Sierra Smith had five points and 10 rebounds.
