St. John’s game will now be on Fox

- By Dom Amore

The UConn men have another appearance on national TV.

The game against St. John’s on Monday has a new start time, 2:30 p.m., and will be televised by Fox (locally on Fox61). Previously, it was to be on cable, FS1, and start at 5 p.m., but COVID forced the network to do some shuffling, and the Huskies (7-1, 4-1), ranked 25th in the Associated Press poll, should certainly offer ratings.

The Notre Dame-versus-Howard nonconference game was originally slated for Fox in the 2:30 p.m. slot but was canceled due to a COVID issue in Howard’s program.

UConn games against Creighton on Jan. 23, at St. John’s on Jan. 31, versus Seton Hall on Feb. 6, at Xavier on Feb. 13, at Villanova on Feb. 20 and versus Marquette on Feb. 27 are all scheduled for Fox. The game versus Georgetown on March 6 is slated for CBS. All of that, of course, is subject to change with the pandemic still a factor.

Xavier, scheduled to play at UConn on Wednesday, is in a shutdown due to a positive COVID-19 test within its program. Its game versus Seton Hall on Saturday was postponed.

The game at UConn is still on the schedule.

New home for Brown at A&M

Freshman Javonte Brown, who left the UConn program and entered the transfer portal Jan. 5, has enrolled at Texas A&M, which was one of the schools recruiting him along with UConn while he was at Thornlea School in Toronto.

The 7-foot Brown played four minutes in his six games for UConn. He told SI.com it was “pretty disappointing” when Kenya Hunter, the assistant coach who took the lead in recruiting him for UConn, left for Indiana over the summer.

Brown was concerned that with seniors getting the option of an extra year’s eligibility due to COVID, he might not break into the Huskies’ rotation next year either. Also, Texas A&M has been a landing place for several Canadian prospects, including Cashius McNeilly, who played with Brown at Thornlea.
